Which paper is best for realistic drawing?
Newsprint paper is a perfect example: it’s made of wood cellulose containing lignin, and yellows very quickly. When lignin is removed from wood cellulose, however, it results in very durable paper (for example, Strathmore 400 Series Drawing Paper – my personal favorite).
What paper should I use for charcoal?
A fine toothed paper is better suited to adhere the charcoal and creates less dust, while a rough toothed paper will adhere but can be more difficult to blend. Papers with a shiny or glossy surface aren’t suitable because the charcoal won’t adhere properly.
What paper is best for shading?
A soft vellum surface. The random texture is ideal for sublte and even shading. Strathmore 500 Series Plate Drawing or Plate Bristol papers are our very smoothest. The smoother the paper, the more difficult it can be to produce an even shade.

Printer paper is a lesser grade than sketching paper, it’s lightweight, not meant for final drawings, but for studies and exercises or toss-aways. For those purposes it’s fine. But, keep in mind, printer paper is made from cellulose fibers from wood pulp, so it isn’t intended for art.
