Average Percent DNA Shared Between Relatives
Relationship | Average \% DNA Shared | Range |
---|---|---|
Identical Twin | 100\% | N/A |
Parent / Child | 50\% (but 47.5\% for father-son relationships) | N/A |
Full Sibling | 50\% | 38\% – 61\% |
Grandparent / Grandchild Aunt / Uncle Niece / Nephew Half Sibling | 25\% | 17\% – 34\% |
Aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews You share about 25 percent of your DNA with a biological aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew. Your aunt or uncle shares 50 percent of their DNA with your parent (their sibling), who shares 50 percent of their DNA with you.
Can an aunt show up as a cousin on ancestry DNA?
DNA matches who are a first cousin share a match with one of your grandparents. Besides first cousins, the matches in this category can be aunts and uncles, great-aunts and great-uncles, great-nieces and great-nephews, and so forth. These AncestryDNA cousin matches are more distant relatives.
DNA Segments Come In All Different Lengths and Sizes With both of those processes in mind, you can use the amount of shared DNA to tell how someone is related to you. On average full siblings will share about 50\% of their DNA, while half siblings will share about 25\% of their DNA.
You’re equally related to your parents and siblings – but only on average. It’s often said you’re equally genetically related to parents as (full) siblings: your ‘relatedness’ is a half. That means the chance that a bit of your own DNA is shared with your mother (by inheriting it from her) is 1/2.
Why do siblings share 50 percent of genes?
While we do get 50\% of our DNA from each parent, we don’t get the same 50\% as our siblings. In general, there is about a 50\% overlap between the DNA you got from your mom and the DNA your brother or sister got from that same mom. So you and your sibling share 50\% of 50\% of mom’s DNA or 25\%.
You will likely share between about 575-1330 cMs with a full great-uncle or aunt. If your relative is a half-great aunt or uncle, you will likely share between 215-650 cMs.
The average percentage of DNA nieces/nephews share with uncles/aunts are typically 25\%. 1700 CM. But it can also range from 17\%-22\%
Can you get your DNA from a half aunt?
An individual can’t “get” or “receive” or “inherit” genes or DNA from anyone but their parents. Instead, you would say it is DNA inherited from the grandparents by both the uncle and the niece (through the parent of the niece). Keeping this in consideration, how much DNA do you share with half aunt?
We typically share about 12.5\% of our DNA with these relatives. Measured in centimorgans (cMs), we share about 850 cMs with our grandparents’ siblings. If our relative is a half-great uncle or aunt, we would share an average of 425 cMs.
How common is it to have a relationship with your great uncle?
One of your siblings might share more DNA with a great-uncle, which is very common, and this can help you determine if more research needs to be done on your recent ancestry. For example, if your full sibling shares more DNA with your relative, it might place your relationship “firmly” into the full great-uncle or aunt category.
