Can a slab of p-type semiconductor be physically join to another and type semiconductor slab to form pn junction justify your answer?
p-n junction does not work A p-n junction works if there is a continuous structure when joined. But if we physically join the two semiconductors, there will always be very small microscopic gap between the two. Hence it won’t work.
Can a slab of p-type semiconductor be physically?
No! Any slab, howsoever flat, will have roughness much larger than the inter-atomic crystal spacing (~2 to 3 Å) and hence continuous contact at the atomic level will not be possible.
Can we make diode by physically connecting p and N?
Important thing is you can not construct a diode by electrically connecting the P and N junctions.
Can two p and n-type semiconductors be placed in contact to form a pn junction diode give reason?
If you simply stick two p-type and n-type semiconductors to each other by hand, it will not behave as a diode. The main reason that a pn junction can behave as a one-directional device is it’s built-in potential.
Can we take one slab of p type?
level will not be possible. For the charge carries , the junction will behave as a discontinuity .
What happens when we connect p and n type semiconductor?
When P-type and N-type come into contact, carriers, which are holes and free electrons, are attracted to each other, recombine at the junction of P-type and N-type, and disappear. Because there are no carriers near the junction, it is called a depletion layer, and it becomes the same state as an insulator.
At what temperature would an intrinsic semiconductor behave like a perfect insulator?
absolute zero temperature
A semiconductor acts like an ideal insulator at absolute zero temperature that is at zero kelvin. It is because the free electrons in the valence band of semiconductors will not carry enough thermal energy to overcome the forbidden energy gap at absolute zero.
When N-type semiconductor is kept between two p-type semiconductor It is known as?
p-n junction
When two semiconductor of p-type and n- type are brought in contact, they form p-n junction which act like a rectifier.
What happens when we connect p and n-type semiconductor?
What happens if you put a p-type and n-type side by side?
What happens in the p-type semiconductor?
An electric current occurs when electrons move through a material. A p-type semiconductor has more holes than electrons. This allows the current to flow along the material from hole to hole but only in one direction. Semiconductors are most often made from silicon.
Can we make a pn junction by putting a slab of p type semiconductor onto and N type semiconductor?
We just can’t do this because we just don’t require physical interaction but atomic intersection between the slabs which is done while fabrication process of pn junction. Physical welding of semiconductors would produce interface defects in the parts per thousand.
What is the difference between P-type and n-type semiconductors?
The existing electrons within the conduction band of the n-type semiconductor are more variable when compare to holes in the valence band of a p-type semiconductor. The hole’s mobility is less when they are more bound toward the nucleus.
Why P-n junction cannot be produced at atomic level?
3.Why cannot we take one slab of p-type semiconductor and physically join it to another slab of n-type semiconductor to get p-n junction? Ans .In this way, continuous contact cannot be produced at atomic level and junction will behave as a discontinuity for the flowing charge carrier.
What is p-type semiconductor doping?
The process of adding impurities to the p-type semiconductor to change their properties is called p-type semiconductor doping. Generally, the materials used in doping for trivalent & pentavalent elements are Si & Ge.
What is a PN junction diode made of?
The PN-junction diode is made up of two adjacent parts of two semiconductor materials like p-type and n-type. These materials are semiconductors like Si (silicon) or Ge (germanium), including atomic impurities. Here the type of semiconductor can be determined by the kind of impurity there.
