Can I use tap water when making wine?
You can, but the chlorine in the water could cause cork taint in the wine. If you are going to use tap water you might want to boil the water and let it cool back down before using it for any wine related activities. Or just use bottled spring, or distilled water.
Can you substitute water for distilled water?
Yes, it is. If you want to avoid the risks that regular mineral water and tap water come with, then using distilled or reverse osmosis water will be your best option.

Can You distill water to make wine?

Bottled water is a good choice for making wine because it has been purified but still contains some essential minerals.
Can I use well water for winemaking?
Our Suggestion: Do not use well water for winemaking. Distilled water is the result of a process of removing all the minerals from the water solution; this can be done via distillation methods or reverse osmosis.
Can you use distilled water for yeast?
If distilled water is the only type of water you have available, then you will need to add yeast nutrient to ensure the necessary minerals are in the solution for the yeast to operate properly. This is an easily avoidable additional step, just use a different type of water. Our Suggestion: Do not use distilled water for winemaking.
Does chlorinated water kill wine?
Unfortunately, the chlorinated water that saves your life, kills your wine. If you can smell or taste chlorine in a glass of tap water, then you will also be able to smell or taste the chlorine in the wine. There are a number of ways to fight against the unwanted variables of tap water, but we simply recommend purchasing bottled water.
