Can it lightning in space?
Space is a vacuum. water cannot exist in a vacuum, it vaporizes and the molecules scatter. Lightning requires objects with different charges, there are no objects in deep space, hence no lighting.
What is space lightning called?
Sprites or red sprites are large-scale electric discharges that occur high above thunderstorm clouds, or cumulonimbus, giving rise to a varied range of visual shapes flickering in the night sky.
Can you see lightning from outer space?
If you’re on the ground during a thunderstorm, you might witness a spectacular show of lightning. But if you’re observing that same thunderstorm from the vantage point of the International Space Station, you might see a bolt of energy shooting up from the clouds.
Do all planets have lightning?
Lightning is found all over the solar system. Spacecraft have detected extraterrestrial lightning strikes in the clouds of Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus.
Can lightning escape a black hole?
Measurements of this gamma ray ‘lightning’ showed it was travelling across the event horizon – the boundary where nothing can escape the intense gravity of the black hole – at rates that appeared to be faster than the speed of light.
What happens if lightning is black?
Contrary to ordinary lightning (which is explained using slow electrons), dark lightning is caused by high energy electrons colliding with surrounding air molecules, resulting in the release of gamma rays. Most commonly, humans are “hit” by dark lightning when flying through thunderstorms.
Can lightning red?
Red lightning within a cloud indicates the presence of rain. Yellow or orange lightning occurs when there is a large concentration of dust in the air. White lightning is a sign of low humidity or a little amount of moisture in the air. White is the color of lightning that most often ignites forest fires.
Does Lightning come from Outer Space?
More than 20 years ago, physicist Alex Gurevich at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow suggested lightning might be initiated by cosmic rays from outer space. These particles strike Earth with gargantuan amounts of energy surpassing anything the most powerful atom smashers on the planet are capable of.
What causes the sound of Thunder?
Thunder is caused by lightning. Thunder is the sound caused by rapidly expanding gases a channel of lightning discharge. Lightning has enough energy to heat the air up to 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit. This causes a rapid spreading of the air, creating a sound wave heard as thunder.
What is in the Lightning?
A lightning strike or lightning bolt is an electric discharge between the atmosphere and an Earth-bound object. They mostly originate in a cumulonimbus cloud and terminate on the ground, called cloud to ground (CG) lightning.
Is there Lightning on Uranus?
Lightning On Uranus. Apparently the lightning strikes on Uranus are more powerful than those on Earth, but nowhere near as strong as the magnificent electrical discharges on Saturn. The bolts are giant sparks of static electricity generated by turbulence in the Uranian atmosphere.
