Rule #1: The two buttons available to call an elevator have an up arrow and a down arrow. These are meant to indicate whether you want to go up or down, not whether the elevator must come up or down. For example, if you’re on Floor 3 and you want to go to Floor 7, you need to press the Up arrow button.
Two Call Buttons are used outside the Elevator to determine which Direction you’ll be going and to avoid the elevator reach maximum capacity by putting request calls on HOLD by preventing to halt on floors where the person wants to travel an opposite direction.
Do you press up or down on a lift?
If you are waiting for the elevator, there is sure to be an up and down button, depending on what floor you are on. If you are going up, push the top one, and when going down, push the bottom one. When inside the elevator, press the button for the floor you want to go to.
Call Buttons are used to request an elevator. They are mounted 42″ above the finished floor and consist of an up button and a down button that illuminate to indicate the request has been received and an elevator is on the way. Hall Lanterns are used to indicate the arriving elevator and the direction it will travel.

How many call buttons do you need for an elevator?
In a building with two floors, you only need one call button. The system understands that you want to go to the other floor. If there are three floors, then the person on the middle floor might want to go up and might want to go down. If the elevator is already going to the wrong floor it will take three times as long to get to their destination.
Floor Selection Buttons are used to select floors that the elevator will stop at. The highest floor button shall be at 54″ above finished floor or lower. Buttons are 3/4″ diameter and illuminate on being pressed. Operation and Emergency Buttons are offset below the floor selection buttons.
How do you get into the elevator at Level 0?
The Up arrow is already pressed. You come and press both the Up and Down buttons. The elevator was planning to go to Floor -2. Since you pressed the Down button, it will stop at Level 0. No one will get in or out. But you will have to wait until the door opens, waits a few seconds and then closes.
