Ubuntu recommends 2 GB of RAM (why didn’t you just look that up??) . Methinks you should be able to run Ubuntu on 512 MB of RAM, which a bit of tweaking. The miniumum would not support X11 or any bloatware. Just like Windows does not need much to run. If you want to run non-trivial applications, you will need more than the minimum.
