But to answer the OP, I think people get emotional about cruelty to animals because they are we see them as more vulnerable than us, especially domesticated animals and we tend to protect and feel empathy (sympathy? i dunno) with the vulnerable? TBH, I had a conversation with my husband a few weeks back.
