If you are over 18, no in-car driving lessons are required by California. But we sure do recommend them. Most adult drivers require anywhere from 4-12 hours depending on their special needs.

Why do we need to drive?

We found that motivations to drive include independence, personal space, and social and career opportunities. While young people gain independence from driving, other benefits are often not realised. And when they reach their 20s, many non-drivers have achieved the benefits driving brings so have less desire to learn.

Is it scary to drive?

Driving itself is not scary, its what people can do behind the wheel that induces fear. ONE poorly planned lane change by someone else traveling at highway speeds can result in a horrific accident. ONE slip of judgement in turning right or left or trying to see if its clear can result in a collision.

What skills do you need to drive?

Skills a new driver needs to master while in high-speed, high-traffic conditions:

  • Merging into traffic.
  • Identifying road signs and exits.
  • Navigating toll booths.
  • Passing and being overtaken.
  • Maintaining proper speed.
  • Being courteous to others.
  • Keeping a safe following distance.

Is 20 hours enough to learn to drive?

As a rule of thumb, learning to drive takes around 45 hours of professional lessons and 20 hours of practice. That could be spread out over three or four months. The trouble is, everyone is different. Equally, you could take to driving really easily and pass with fewer lessons.

There are so many ways that driving can help people. It helped me reach work experience placements and voluntary opportunities, which furthered my career. For others it means peace of mind when looking after a loved one who requires regular care. Having a driving licence means a lot of things to different people in different walks of life.

Having the necessary drive and determination is one thing, but if you really are committed to achieving your goals then there is no cutting corners. As the legendary American inventor Thomas Edison once said, “There is no substitute for hard work” and this statement really does ring true.

Public transport can be unreliable, through bad weather and poor driving conditions, industrial strikes or bank holidays. By driving you reduce the risk of encountering these issues. You’re more flexible, and there’s no need to worry about the imminent rail strike at 8am that will delay your morning commute.
