Look at it this way, there’s more to progression than hitting people with bigger numbers than before. For instance, on the 3DS the games that have given me the greatest sense of progression were Animal Crossing New Leaf and the free streetpass games (find-mii/puzzle-swap).

The Bioware games (Mass Effect, Dragon Age) have great ways of progressing though building your character, building your party, building your relationships. I think Fable’s along the same lines but I haven’t gotten very far in any of them. Lots of sports games that have career or dynasty modes.

Progression is a lot of fun in it. Like being able to build dwarmen auto-turrets if you invest into smithing, or force enemies to dance if you invest in speech is a lot of fun. It really makes trying out new builds fresh and exciting.
