What is jail like compared to prison?

Jail and prison are often used interchangeably as places of confinement. If you want to be specific jail can be used to describe a place for those awaiting trial or held for minor crimes, whereas prison describes a place for convicted criminals of serious crimes.

Prisons today are very different. Severe overcrowding is now the major problem in most prisons. Cells originally built for one prisoner, now often house two or three men. In addition, tensions among prisoners and between prisoners and the prison staff often run high and lead to brutal attacks.

What did you learn from visiting someone in prison?

What I did learn from visiting and being on the inside myself is empathy. I was brought up a spoiled rich kid and it made me appreciate my life so much more. If you have a loved one in prison you have two choices. You can either do their sentence with them and let it follow you every day, or you can live your life.
