In some elevators there is a movable door sill for safety. If someone gets stuck with his foot between the hallway and the elevator while the door is open, a ledge in the floor will act as a switch, resetting all buttons.
If you have a newer model elevator with ‘static sensitive’ buttons (these are the ones that light up when you touch them) and press the wrong button by mistake, press all the buttons. The elevator assumes you are being an elevator hooligan and resets the panel.
Does it matter what elevator button you press?
You press ONLY the one for the direction you want to go, and cars continuing past you in the other direction ignore it. (There can be times when it’s advantageous to get on going the wrong way, but that only changes which button you press, not whether you should do both.)
Is it safe to stop an elevator?
In the event of an elevator emergency: If the elevator should ever stop between floors, do not panic. There is plenty of air in the elevator. Never climb out of a stalled elevator. Above all, wait for qualified help to arrive and never try to leave an elevator that has not made a normal stop.
The two buttons available to call an elevator have an up arrow and a down arrow. These are meant to indicate whether you want to go up or down, not whether the elevator must come up or down. For example, if you’re on Floor 3 and you want to go to Floor 7, you need to press the Up arrow button.

Let’s assume that you are in 2nd floor, you wanted to go downstairs and the lift is in ground floor and the person in the lift wants to go to 5th floor. What happens if you press the up button instead of down?
Now if you press up button instead of down button. The lift assumes that you are going upstairs and doors of the lift will open in 2nd floor. Instead of that if you press down button, lift will first go to 5th floor and in return it will pick you.
How many call buttons do you need for an elevator?
In a building with two floors, you only need one call button. The system understands that you want to go to the other floor. If there are three floors, then the person on the middle floor might want to go up and might want to go down. If the elevator is already going to the wrong floor it will take three times as long to get to their destination.
